Introduction to Metalsmithing - Make Your Own Stacking Rings You will produce at least one, but most likely between 2-3 sterling silver or brass (or both) stacking rings to wear home. You'll learn about the tools and equipment and how to size, saw, solder, shape, hammer and polish the metals using tools such as a caliper, jewelers saw, files, hammers, and a butane torch (among others). We will measure your finger, choose the type of wire you’d like to work with, and measure out the length of wire we must use for your ring. You'll then saw the wire, form and prepare it for soldering, seal the joint with a torch, shape it into a perfect-fitting ring with a hammer and mandrel, and file and polish until it's ready to wear. We will do this as many times as possible, time permitting. You’ll have the choice between different sizes and shapes of wire as well as the opportunity to add your own texture or use pre-patterned wires I’ll also have available. This introductory workshop will give you a taste of metalsmithing jewelry as well as the skills to make a lot more! I’m happy to share resources for making your own home jewelry set up after falling in love with your new skill set.

About the Teacher

Bianca Moscatelli

Art has always been a central part of my life, something I’ve wanted to immerse myself in as much as possible. I learned that meant I wanted to use my hands, tools and materials from the earth to craft unique accessories. My journey into jewelry-making began in New York City, where I started experimenting with stones and pre-made metal components as a creative outlet after work. Shortly thereafter, I was eager to dive into metalsmithing. I loved the idea of making something I could wear (without sewing) and, for me, making jewelry meant using fire and hammers! After starting classes at The School of Visual Arts, I was smitten. 15 years later, here in Los Angeles, metalsmithing is still my favorite. In addition to making jewelry, I am now able to teach the skills to others and share this incredible gift.
